India on Thursday dismissed England for 183 in the first innings of the first Test in Notthingham’s Trent Bridge. Nine of the ten wickets were picked by India’s four-man pace attack. After the innings, England batting coach Marcus Trescothick termed the Indian bowling attack as ‘most potent’.

“They’re probably the most potent in comparison to where they’ve been for a few years,” Trescothick said during the virtual media interaction after the day’s play.

“They have a lot of bases covered. When they needed certain wickets you can just see the guys who were not playing in the season. You know how much quality they have all sorts of good stuff of red ball bowlers currently.”

“You know, they don’t get to be in the World Test Championship final for no reason. They play home and away and of course they’ve got to have facts to back that up.

On Wednesday, India bowled England out in just 65.4 overs. The last of the six England batsmen could put up just 45 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah led from the front picking four wickets for 46. Mohammed Shami had three against his name. Shardul Thakur, who made a surprise entry into the playing XI, picking two wickets, including the prized scalp of England captain Joe Root.

Trecothick said that England have to make sure that they remain positive, even though it was not the ideal day. “We’ve got to just keep making sure that we remain positive about what goes on. Today’s not the ideal day of course. But, you know that doesn’t sort of define how the rest of the game is going to go or how the rest of the series is going to go,” he said.

England are coming into the game having played a T20I series recently. The last Test that England played was against New Zealand, which took place before the World Test Championship final.
