Australian star Nick Kyrgios was beaten in the men’s singles quarterfinal of the US Open on Tuesday, September 6, by Russian Karen Khachanov. Not only did the Russian star beat Kyrgios 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7(7)-6(3), 4-6 at the Flushing Meadows, but he was also fined for his outburst after the match.

Kyrgios is known widely for his temperament and it once again put him on the headlines as he was fined $14,000 on Wednesday, September 7, for smashing his double racquet after he was knocked out of the 2022 US Open by Karen Khachanov.

The 27-year-old broke two racquets by smashing them on the surface of the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday. Wednesday’s fine was also the fifth instance he was sanctioned by the tournament organizers, the last of which came because of his bad language and spitting.

Kyrgios’ total fines at the US Open stand at an astounding $32,500, however, it is only a small fraction of the prize money that he received from the tournament for reaching the quarterfinals. The prize money that he received is $445,000.

He was regarded as one of the favourites at the US Open 2022 ahead of the tournament, however, could not live up to the expectations. After the defeat, Kyrgios revealed that he was devastated because of the loss.

“Just feel like it was either winning it all or nothing at all, to be honest,” he said after the quarterfinal defeat. “I feel like I’ve just failed at this event right now. That’s what it feels like,” he added.

Nick Kyrgios finished as the runners-up at Wimbledon earlier this year, when he was beaten by Croatian great Novak Djokovic in the final.

However, he began his US Open 2022 campaign on a bright note, defeating his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round. Kyrgios went on to beat Benjamin Bonzi of France and JJ Wolf of the United States in the second and third rounds respectively. He also defeated world no. 1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the round of 16, but could not replicate his winning performance against Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.
