San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Trey Lance, went down due to an injury in their NFC West encounter against the Seattle Seahawks after colliding with the latter’s linebacker, Cody Barton. The 22-year-old had to be carted off the field and had his right leg in an air cast. It was later reported that he has suffered an ankle injury.

The incident took place during the game’s second drive. The 49ers later announced that the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship Game winner would not be returning for the match.

Lance was consoled by his teammates as well as Seahawks players before he was replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo, the former 49ers starter. In 2021, Lance was drafted third overall, and had taken over the starting position from Garoppolo at the beginning of the ongoing season.

During the pre-season, Garoppolo did not practice with the team, and was throwing on his own instead on a side field. He agreed to return to the team as a backup, albeit on a reduced contract. The 30-year-old quarterback will have a chance of proving himself if Lance remains out with his injury for an extended period of time.

Although the 49ers are currently 13-0 up in the match, it remains to be seen how the injury to their quarterback affects their performance in the remainder of the encounter.
