Garoppolo was named the backup quarterback for the 49ers before the start of the season to make room for Lance as the number one option at that spot. He signed a one-year fully guaranteed $6.5 million contract to stay with the team.

The 30-year-old from Texas, in the past, has been criticized for his deep ball passing ability which has been reflected in the 49ers’ offense since the player has been on the team since 2017. Current head coach Kyle Shanahan prefers a dual-threat QB to run in his system which Lance successfully presents for the team.

He has thrown 71 passing touchdowns in his NFL career while simultaneously giving away the ball for 38 interceptions in that time which makes his TD to interception ratio around 2:1 which isn’t great for a quarterback eyeing regular playing time in the NFL.

Despite this criticism, the player is a two-time Super Bowl Winner with wins during his time with the New England Patriots when he served as the backup to Tom Brady. His wins came in 2014 which was his rookie year and in 2017 which was his final year with the team. Since his trade to the 49ers post the 2017 NFL season, the player has taken the team to one Super Bowl appearance, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, and two NFC Championship games.
