India are on brink of an Asia Cup 2022 exit. The Men in Blue on Tuesday were defeated by Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage. Now, they need Pakistan to lose both their remaining games and win their match against Afghanistan.

If Rohit Sharma and co have a superior net run rate than both Pakistan and Afghanistam, they will make it to the final.

India came into the Asia Cup 2022 as favourites. They won both group games – against Pakistan and Hong Kong. However, the team has lost back-to-back Super 4 matches.

Against Sri Lanka, the new ball bowlers looked ordinary. The ball was not moving much and openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka stitched a 97-run stand in 11 overs at the top. Yuzvendra Chahal hit back at them with three wickets within two overs and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin got one.

From 97/0, Sri Lanka were reduced to 110/4. However, skipper Dasun Shanaka and Rajapaksha shared a 64-run partnership to take the team home.

In their Super 4 game against Pakistan, India’s middle-order failed after an electrifying start. Except Virat Kohli, none of them found their feet. Bowling-wise, the Men in Blue were a pacer short. Avesh Khan pulled out of the game after falling ill. Hardik Pandya was the third pacer. He gave away 44 runs in his four overs.

In both matches, India lost the toss and were asked to bat first. The Dubai International Stadium pitch has a record of favouring the teams chasing. All games in the Asia Cup 2022 at the venue have been won by sides batting second.

India were also missing a key player in Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder was ruled out of the Asia Cup after sustaining an injury. He and Panyda guided the team to a win in their opener against Pakistan. The 33-year-old was replaced by Deepak Hooda in the playing 11, who did not bowl at all and struggled with the bat.

Rohit Sharma and co are set to face Afghanistan on Thursday.
