Justin Herbert is an American Football Quarterback who plays for the Los Angeles Chargers in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Chargers as the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Herbert was born on March 10, 1998, in Eugene, Oregon, USA. He went to Sheldon High School and participated in football, basketball, and baseball. He rushed for 543 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior and passed for 3,130 yards and 37 touchdowns. Herbert committed to play for the University of Oregon’s football team, the Oregon Ducks.

In his rookie college season, Herbert threw for 1,936 yards and scored 19 touchdowns to go with 4 interceptions. Herbert had a 6-2 record in eight starts as a sophomore and threw for 1983 yards, with a 67.5% pass completion, and scored 15 passing touchdowns and had only five interceptions. He also ran 44 times for 183 yards and five touchdowns.

In his senior year as Oregon Ducks QB, Herbert recorded his best ever season as he totaled 3,471 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, and four rushing touchdowns with only 5 interceptions and was awarded the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is given to the American college football player who has the best combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance. He also won the Rose Bowl MVP after guiding his team to a 28-27 victory against the 11-seed Wisconsin Badgers in the 2020 Rose Bowl Game.

NFL Career:

The Los Angeles Chargers selected Herbert sixth overall in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was the third overall quarterback selected, behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa.   Herbert signed a four-year rookie contract worth a fully guaranteed $26.6 million on July 25, 2020.

Although being named as a backup quarterback to Tyrod Taylor, Herbert made his season debut in Week 2 against the Kansas City Chiefs, after team doctors accidentally punctured Taylor’s lungs making him unable to play. The team lost 23-20 in overtime in his debut match, but Herbert also became only the third player in NFL history to throw for over 300 yards and also rush for a touchdown in his first game in NFL. He achieved this record thanks to his 311 passing yards, 1 passing TD, 1 interception, and 1 rushing TD in that game.

He was named Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year after passing for 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in his rookie season.

In Week 5 of the 2021season, against the Cleveland Browns, Herbert had his best statistical game of the season. He had 398 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown in a 47–42 victory. He earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week for week 9.

Herbert broke Andrew Luck’s record for most passing yds in the first two seasons of a NFL QB’s career in the Week 15 clash against the Kansas City Chiefs. Subsequently, he also broke Dan Marino’s record for most total touchdowns in an NFL quarterback’s first two seasons. In the final game of the 2021 season in which a win would qualify the team for the postseason, against the Las Vegas Raiders, Herbert threw for 383 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in a 35-32 overtime loss that eliminated the Chargers from the playoffs.

Herbert set franchise records in 2021 with 5,014 passing yards, 38 passing touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He also had 63 carries for 302 yards and three rushing touchdowns, helping the Chargers to a 9-8 record and his first career Pro Bowl appearance.

According to ESPN’s 2022 QB Ranking, Justin Herbert was placed at the seventh spot behind last year’s league MVP, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow, but ahead of 2019 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray among many others.
