The Pennsylvanian man accused of killing a bald eagle in a Pittsburgh suburb in May is the father of Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas II, records revealed.

The US Attorney’s Office announced this week that the elder Rodney Thomas, 50, of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh for violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Thomas turned himself in to police quickly after reportedly shooting the bird to death in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, on May 12. However, it took them more than two months to identify him or announce his accusations. Residents of Mount Pleasant were furious about the time taken.

Two eagles, including the one that would eventually die, had nested in the region for almost 20 years. According to a couple who spoke to The Post, residents called the magnificent bird “Sam” after the Muppet Vision 3D character from Disney.

The Colts selected 25-year-old Yale University standout Thomas II in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Despite the team’s appalling 4-12-1 record, which included a 17-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, he had a successful debut season.

Thomas was freed on a bail of $10,000 but is still subject to a $5,000 fine and a year in jail. Rodney Thomas II and the Colts have declined to comment so far.
