NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was in attendance at the Thursday night football game in week 2 of the league when the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Los Angeles Chargers. He was seen sitting with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in the stands, who was accompanied by his girlfriend Lauren Sánchez.

Pictures of Goodell and Bezos went viral on social media platforms soon during the game. The Chiefs vs Chargers game marked the first Thursday night football game broadcasted by Amazon Prime Video after the NFL signed a deal with the company worth $13 billion, which will run till 2033, and Goodell and Bezos were in attendance to mark the first game of the partnership.

Who is Roger Goodell?

Roger Goodell is an American businessman and present commissioner of the National Football League (NFL). He was born on February 19, 1959, in Jamestown, New York to former Congressman and US Senator Charles Goodell and Jean Goodell. Roger attended the Bronxville High School, where he captained the football, basketball and baseball teams. He was also named his school’s athlete of the year and graduated from the school. Roger later pursued a degree in economics from the Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania.

Goodell is married to Jane Skinner, a former Fox News anchor. The couple has twin daughters. He also has four brothers, one of whom, Tim, is a Senior Vice President of the Hess Corporation. His cousin Andy is a politician, who is a member of the New York State Assembly.

The 63-year-old began his career with the NFL as an intern in New York under former commissioner Pete Rozelle. He later joined the New York Jets in an internship but rejoined the NFL as a public relation assistant in 1984.

He was appointed as an assistant to Lamar Hunt, the president of the American Football Conference, in 1987. He became the NFL Executive Vice President and COO in late 2001.

As the COO, Goodell was instrumental in the expansion of the league and the development of stadiums. He also launched the NFL Network and helped to secure TV deals.

After the retirement of former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Goodell was one of the candidates to replace him. He received 23 votes and became the next commissioner of the NFL on August 8, 2006.
