Rick Jeanneret, the legendary play-by-play announcer known for his 51-year tenure as the voice of the team, died on Thursday night, the Buffalo Sabres confirmed. He died at the age of 81, as confirmed by his family.

Buffalo Sabres shared the news of his death in a tweet, “The Buffalo Sabres mourn the life of our legendary broadcaster and a member of our family, Rick Jeanneret, who passed away today. We send all of our love to his family and friends, and the entire Sabres community.”

John Richard Jeanneret, widely recognized as “RJ,” was a famous Canadian television and radio personality praised for his extensive 51-year tenure as the play-by-play announcer for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). He had a big role in the team’s broadcast network, the Sabres Hockey Network. Jeanneret began working with the team on the radio in the 1971–1972 season, and he kept up that distinguished career until the end of the 2021–2022 campaign. Surprisingly, his prolonged tenure made him the longest-tenured play-by-play announcer for a single franchise in the NHL.

During the 1995–96 season, Jeanneret made the switch to television coverage, and starting with the 1997–98 season, he started handling both radio and television play-by-play duties. He was fondly referred to as “RJ” among close friends and within the Sabres organization.
