Google on Monday said that it would permit its employees, who do not need to be in the office, to work from home until the end of June 2021. It had earlier decided to open its offices by June this year but had later postponed it as most employees wanted to work from home until the end of this year.

The decision was made by Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai last week after debate among an internal group of top executives that he chairs, reported Wall Street Journal.

“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021, for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” a mail addressed to Google employees.

The move would be beneficial to over 200,000 employees worldwide who work for Google and its parent company Alphabet.

Twitter was the first to offer a permanent Work From Home option for its employees given that they opt for it and their job role permits the same. Facebook also followed suit stating that employees can Work From Home even after the Coronavirus crisis ends. He had estimated that close to 50 per cent of the workforce would be remotely working for the next 10 years.

The decision from the tech-giant comes at a time when the coronavirus cases have zoomed past 16.3 million globally.
