A little more than a month left for the US presidential election, politics is expected to feature prominently in the 72nd Emmy Awards, the first such event to be held amid the coronavirus pandemic. Right before the event which is being held virtually, host Jimmy Kimmel donned a mask with ‘VOTE’ written on it.

“Ready for #Emmy! #VOTE,” he tweeted.

The 72nd edition of the Emmys is unlike its previous editions. There is no red carpet or fancy gowns and the host is broadcasting from an empty theatre in Los Angeles.

Winners at the 72nd Emmys — the small-screen equivalent of the Oscars — have been sent cameras to hook up in their own living rooms, gardens and even bedrooms.

With 26 nominations, ‘Watchmen’ is set to dominate the night, primarily in the limited series categories. The graphic novel spin-off tackles historic US racism and police violence, issues which have assumed the spotlight following the custodial killing of George Floyd, an African-American man, by four white Minneapolis police officers, in May this year.

Dark crime series “Ozark” is leading the nominations in the drama categories with 18. HBO’s hit show ‘Succession’ also has 18 nominations.

Netflix is leading the event with 160 nominations, while HBO has 107.
