A complaint was filed on Saturday in Delhi against Vincent Xavier, who carried the Indian tricolour to the US Capitol Hill protests on Wednesday, ANI reported. The protests had turned violent with a mob storming the Capitol Hill building, vandalising and ransacking it.

Amid the protests outside the Capitol, the Indian national flag was spotted, the video of which went viral on social media. The man who waved the flag was later identified as Xavier.

According to media reports, he hails from Kerala and is currently a Virginia resident. He is a Republican and Trump supporter.

As the incident of the tricolour fluttering amid the US and pro-Trump flags stirred anger and dismay, it also stoked curiosity over who was the person who waved it.

It led to a war of words between Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi.

It started when the latter took to Twitter ask why was the tricolour at the protests. “This is one fight we definitely don’t need to participate in,” he had tweeted, along with the video of the incident.

Retweeting Gandhi’s tweet, Tharoor wrote, “there are some Indians with the same mentality as that Trumpist mob, who enjoy using the flag as a weapon.”

“Unfortunately, most liberals have flagrantly ignored warnings of its misuse in anti-national protests (e.g. in JNU) in India as well,” Gandhi snapped at Tharoor.

Tagging both Gandhi and Tharoor, Xavier tweeted that they were “peaceful protestors” who were exercising their “rights.”

Later, some claimed on social media that Tharoor had met Xavier and shared the pictures of the two.

The posts and pictures were later by Gandhi.
