When the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, it turned back the clock to 50 years ago, stripping away a woman’s right to seek an abortion.

For many Americans, the decision gives a sense of impending doom, appearing to be the beginning of the very end.

Hinting at what lies ahead, Supreme Court Associate Clarence Thomas recently revealed that the court may revisit issues that could jeopardize LGTBQ+ rights.

“In future cases, we should reconsider all of this court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell,” Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion to the ruling, according to a report by The Guardian.

In 1965, Griswold v Connecticut gave married couples the right to use contraception without the intervention of the government. In 2003, the court ruled in the Lawrence v Texas case that sodomy cannot be criminalized by the states. In 2015, the Obergefell v Hodges case legalized marriage for same-sex couples.

Thomas’ statement confirmed the fears of several progressive leaders and reproductive rights advocates.

“It is important that Americans understand that this supreme court and Republicans in Congress will not stop here,” said Pramila Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

“It is clear [Thomas] and the court’s majority have no respect for other precedents that have been won in recent decades,” she added.

Adam Green, the co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said that the court’s decision would only worsen its “giant legitimacy crisis” with a large chunk of the American population.

“Five Republican justices appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote are routinely making hyper-partisan decisions that take away the rights of Americans,” he said.

Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers are demanding for action in full force and considering legislative options to safeguard the fundamental rights of the people.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged Americans to support Democrats in the November elections, which will give them the opportunity to codify abortion rights into federal law.

“Termination of pregnancy is just the opening act,” Pelosi said on Friday.

“A woman’s right to choose, reproductive freedom is on the ballot in November. We cannot allow [Republicans] to take charge so that they can institute their goal, which is to criminalize reproductive freedom,” she added.
