The Republican Party was hopeful of a “red wave” washing across Capitol once the results of the 2022 US midterms started coming out, but that did not seem to be the case as and when more and more results started coming in. Current reports suggest the Democrats have won 192 seats in the House while the Republicans have pocketed 209 seats.

In the Senate, the Republicans lead with a thin margin of 49-48.

In such a scenario, Geoff Duncan, the Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia, said on CNN This Morning that he believes former President Donald Trump is responsible for a number of surprise losses for the GOP this time around. Many Trump-backed candidates, like Mehmet Oz and Arizona Senate hopeful Blake Masters, have fared poorly in the elections.

Duncan said on the panel, “There’s this … Trump drag factor, right? Everybody who’s tightly associated with Donald Trump — and we watched it play out all over the country in these races — certainly watched it play out in Georgia, I mean, the drag factor is tangible”.

Duncan does not seem to favour the former president and his apparent eagerness to run for the top office in 2024. He also said on the panel and later reiterated on Twitter, “Trump got fired Tuesday night and it’s more obvious than ever republicans are ready to move on. If we want to win back the White House in 2024 we must do better!”

Trump, on the other hand, has said that the results have been “somewhat disappointing”, but still called them a “very big victory.” His post on his social media platform Truth Social read, “While in certain ways yesterday’s election was somewhat disappointing, from my personal standpoint it was a very big victory — 219 WINS and 16 Losses in the General — Who has ever done better than that?”
