Enrique Tarrio, a former leader of the Proud Boys, and three other far-right extremists were found guilty on Thursday of planning an attack on the U.S. Capitol in an effort to save Donald Trump after the Republican lost the 2020 presidential election.

After hearing from dozens of witnesses over the course of more than three months in one of the most serious cases presented in the shocking incident that took place on January 6, 2021, as the whole world watched on live television, a jury in Washington, D.C., convicted Tarrio guilty of seditious conspiracy.

Tarrio was volunteering at a far-right pundit Milo Yiannopoulos event in Miami in May 2017 when he met a member of the Proud Boys, who encouraged him to join the organization.

Tarrio attended the Unite the Right protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017. He claimed to be there to oppose the removal of Confederate monuments and memorials.

Tarrio became a fourth-degree member of the Proud Boys in 2018, a title reserved for individuals who engage in a physical altercation “for the cause”; he assaulted someone thought to be affiliated with antifa.

On November 29, 2018, he succeeded Gavin McInnes, who had served in the position for two days, and Jason Lee Van Dyke as chairman of the organization.

According to Reuters, between 2012 and 2014, Tarrio worked as an informant for both federal and local law enforcement. The Proud Boys had divisions as a result of this revelation. Chapters of the organization broke away from the national group in the wake of the 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
