A multi-story car park collapsed in Manhattan, New York, on Tuesday leading to the death of at least one person and injuries to multiple.

The incident occurred at a three-story building in Manhattan’s financial district. Videos of the damaged building showed cars hanging precariously from a buckled upper floor. The building is located at 57 Ann Street between Nassau Street and William Street.

Firefighters and emergency medical services rushed to the scene to help those affected by the collapse.

John Esposito, the chief of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), stated to BBC that the rescue operation at the site of the collapsed car park was “extremely dangerous” for the firefighters involved. He also described the structure as “very unstable”.

“We had firefighters inside the building conducting searches. The building was continuing to collapse. At this time, we believe that we have the workers that were in danger all accounted for, all out of the building,” Esposito said.

Mayor Eric Adams pointed out to the same outlet that technology played a critical role in the rescue operation.

“I do want to point out that, thank God, we had the robotic dog that was able to go in the building,” Adams said, about the robotic dogs, that went inside the building and send videos from there. After that drones were sent to assess it.

The identity of the deceased is unknown. An official cause for the collapse is also yet to be stated by the authorities.
