Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), who voted against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, delighted on Tuesday that his state will get more than $1 billion for broadband initiatives.

Tuberville tweeted a link to a post about his state receiving $1.4 billion for improving broadband connection to underserved areas, saying “Broadband is essential for the success of our rural communities and for our entire economy. It’s wonderful to see Alabama get essential funding to support continued broadband projects.”

The amount of funding allocated to each state under the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment program of the Commerce Department has been disclosed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which is in charge of overseeing broadband grant program. States who receive this funding now have 180 days to submit a plan to NTIA detailing how they want to use it.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which includes a historic $65 billion investment in boosting high-speed, low-cost broadband, provided the funding for this effort. In November 2021, President Joe Biden officially signed this into law.

When the bill came before the Senate in August 2021, Tuberville voted no.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) similarly tweeted about his state getting $3.3 billion for broadband expansion.

And just like Tuberville, he voted against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

Who are Tuberville and Cornyn?

Tuberville represents conservative values and has aligned himself with the Republican Party. He advocates for issues such as border security, economic growth, and support for veterans.

John Cornyn is a Republican politician and attorney who currently serves as a United States Senator from Texas.

He has also supported measures to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and has been involved in efforts to reform the immigration system.
