Fairfax County police are probing the fatal shooting of a man who was killed by two officers responding to a reported theft at the Tysons Corner Center mall. Loss prevention officers at the mall notified Fairfax County police Wednesday about a theft that was in progress, said Police Chief Kevin Davis at a press conference that evening.

The loss prevention officers led two Fairfax County officers to the man, who has been identified as Timothy Johnson.

Who was Timothy Johnson?

Timothy McCree Johnson, a DC resident, died after a police officer shot him in the chest while in a wooded area near a parking garage at Tysons Corner Center. He was 37 years old.

Officers were called to the Nordstrom department store around 6:30 pm after a security guard reported that designer sunglasses had been stolen.

As per the police account shooting detailed in a news release, an officer saw Johnson exit the store and set off an anti-theft alarm. Officers chased Johnson through a parking garage and into the woods while officers said he disobeyed orders to get on the ground.

They open fire on Johnson in the woods, hitting him once in the chest. Johnson was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Kevin Davis declined to name the two involved officers. He said Johnson was very well known to law enforcement in the region and had an extensive criminal history. The chief added that he does not know if Johnson had a gun.

According to GoFundMe set up by the Fairfax County NAACP, Johnson was an “avid creative spirit” who loved to design clothes and shoes. He had two children and planned on attending school to become a barber.

His mother Melissa Johnson, 56, said her family wants “the truth to come out.’ Melissa said two Fairfax County police officials came to her home Thursday around 1 am to notify her of the shooting but did not share much additional information.
