December 25 is a long-awaited day of every year as Christmas
gets celebrated by billions of people across the planet. While it is more of a
religious and cultural celebration, film industries around the globe release several
movies spiraling around the holiday every year.  

Over the years, among the thousands of Christmas movies, some
have gained a cult following, giving a sense of warmth and love to the viewers.

It’s a Wonderful Life

It’s a Wonderful Life is a 1946 Hollywood classic directed by
Frank Capra and starring James Stewart, Henry Travers, and Donna Reed in the
lead roles. The story is based on George Bailey, a businessman trying to
attempt suicide on Christmas Eve, who is sent an angel, Clarence, from heaven. When
the latter shows him what life would have been without his existence, Bailey
has a change of heart. The movie is considered to be one of the greatest films
of all time, and the best Christmas movie ever made.

Elf

Elf is a 2003 American Christmas comedy film directed by Jon
Favreau and starring Will Ferrell in the lead role alongside supporting actors
James Caan and Zooey Deschanel. The story revolves around Buddy, a human raised
amongst elves at the North Pole, who sets out on a journey to find his
biological father upon realizing that he is not an elf.

Love Actually

The 2003 Christmas romantic-comedy is directed by Richard
Curtis and boasts an ensemble cast of Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth,
Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Rowan Atkinson, Keira Knightley, and Laura Linney among
others. The film focuses on ten stories in and around London involving
different individuals who are all linked together as the film progresses.
Beginning five weeks before Christmas, the film shows how eight couples
navigate their complicated relationships as they all spend the Christmas week.
The film is recognized as a modern-day Christmas staple.

Home Alone

Home Alone is a 1990 American Christmas comedy film directed
by Chris Columbus. Macaulay Culkin plays the lead role of Kevin, an eight-year-old who is accidentally left alone at home while his family leaves for Christmas
vacation in France. The story unfolds as the boy defends his suburban home from
burglars as he tries to put up a fight with them.

Miracle on 34th Street

Miracle on 34th street is a 1947 Hollywood
Christmas movie directed by George Seaton and starring Maureen O’Hara, John
Payne, and Edmund Gwenn in the lead roles. The film shows the life and struggle
of Kris Kringle, an old man who fills in for Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade. When he starts
to claim himself as the real Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine
his authenticity.
