Dutch tennis professional Matwe Middelkoop partnered with India’s Rohan Bopanna to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 French Open.
Middelkoop, who has 12 doubles titles on the ATP Tour to his name, and Bopanna, who was the world number 3 in doubles rankings in 2013, failed to make it to the final of the French Open.
The Indo-Dutch duo were beaten in the semis by the Salvadoran-Dutch pairing of Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Roger, who managed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8/10) in a match that lasted two hours and 17 minutes.
“I’m gutted by the loss,” Bopanna told the press after the loss, adding, “We played well these two weeks, fought through tough matches … and then to be short of making the final by two-three points is tough.”
“They started serving better when the sun came out, about midway through the match. The balls were flying,” the 42-year-old went on to say, explaining where the match was lost.
Arevalo and Roger would go on to win the doubles final of the 2022 French Open, wherein they defeated the Croatian-American duo of Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek by a score of 6–7(4–7), 7–6(7–5), 6–3.
The win was Arevalo’s first major doubles title, making him the first Central American to win a men’s double major.
