Where is the tiniest desert of the world located?

USA

East Africa

Afghanistan

Canada

Answer: Canada

Carcross Desert outside the community of Carcross in Yukon, Canada is considered to be the smallest desert on earth. It occupies an area of about 1 square mile.

While it is commonly referred to as a desert, it is actually a series of northern sand dunes. The area’s climate is too humid to be considered a true desert. The sand was formed during the last glacial period, when large glacial lakes formed and deposited silt.

When the lakes dried, the dunes were left behind. The lack of rainfall is due to the rain-shadow effect which is caused by the neighboring mountains.

It also snows in winter when the sandy surface gets covered by a layer of ice.

The locals use the dunes for sandboarding in summer, and during winter they use the desert for snowboarding and cross-country skiing. The nearby Yukon and White Pass Route is a top-rated tourist attraction which brings many visitors to the area every year.

Several rare species of plant life are found here. Carex sabulosa, or Baikal sedge, is only known to exist in four other sites in North America, mainly existing in Asia.

Yukon lupine, also unusual for the surroundings, “grows like a weed.”
