Amazon Quiz (June 13, 2022): Mount Etna which erupted recently, is located in which country?

Spain

France

Italy

Germany

Answer: Italy

One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mount Etna is an active volcano situated on the east coast of the island of Sicily in Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania.

With a long history of eruptions, Mount Etna also featured in both Greek and Roman mythology, and it was believed that the Greek god Hephaestus (Vulcan in Roman mythology) had his blacksmithing forge under Mount Etna. The Greeks also believed that Typhon, one of the deadliest creatures in Greek mythology, was trapped underneath this mountain by Zeus, the god of lightning and the king of all gods.

A stratovolcano that lies above the convergent plate margin of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, Mount Etna is among the tallest active volcanoes in Europe and had a height of 3,357 metres (11,014 feet) as of July 2021 (Mount Etna’s summit height varies a bit with each eruption).

Mount Etna, which has a basal circumference of 140 kilometres and covers an area of 1,190 square kilometres, is also the largest of Italy’s three active volcanoes, being almost double the height of the second largest, Mount Vesuvius.

Designated as one of the 16 Decade Volcanoes by the United Nations, Mount Etna also happens to be one of the most active volcanoes in the world, being in an almost constant state of volcanic activity. In 2013, Mount Etna was also listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
