Amazon Quiz: This palace was built by which European dynasty?

Hohenzollern

Romanov

Bourbon

Hapsburg

Answer: Hapsburg

The Hapsburg dynasty or the Habsburg dynasty built the Hofburg, the principal imperial seat of the dynasty. Built in the 13th Century, the palace has seen numerous extensions through the years. The Hofburg is located at the centre of Vienna, the largest city in Austria.

The Hofburg became the official residence of the President of Austria in 1946, while it was seat of government since 1279. The palace faces the Heldenplatz (Heroes Square) which was ordered under the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The square was never completed.

The Hofburg has been worked on by numerous architects, including the notable Italian architect-engineer Filiberto Luchese. The word Hofsburg means ‘Castile of the Court,’ which denotes its origin during the Middle Ages. The Hofsburg is also the permanent seat of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The Hofsburg opened to the public for the first time, albeit partially, in 1958 as a convention centre. The centre currently conducts 300-350 events every year with 300,000 to 320,000 guests.
