The decision to hang up her boots came against the backdrop of the American tennis star turning 41 in September 2022. Williams wants to devote more time to her daughter and family after her retirement. She has expressed her distaste for the word ‘retirement’, saying that she prefers ‘evolving’ instead.
As she tearfully addressed the audience gathered to see her play competitive tennis one last time, she had said, “It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on in my life”, adding, “I’m so grateful to every single person that’s ever said, ‘Go, Serena!’ in their life.”
Ajla Tomljanovic, in her address to the fans after the match, apologised to the crowd for ending the career of their favourite tennis star with a defeat. She said that she is as much a fan of Williams as everyone in the crowd is.
Although emotions were running high in the match, which eclipsed Tomljanovic’s win, the 29-year-old played exceptionally well to defeat the 23-times Grand Slam winner. However, this match will be remembered more for Serena William’s farewell than Ajla Tomljanovic’s win.
