The Missionaries of Charity were established in 1950 by Mother Teresa, an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun popularly known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Despite having the name Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu on her passport, she was actually born Anjez Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in the North Macedonian city of Üsküb (now Skopje). She migrated to Ireland and subsequently India after spending eighteen years there in Skopje, where she spent the majority of her life.
As of 2012, Mother Teresa’s religious order had more than 4,500 nuns and was working in 133 different nations. The church oversees homes for those suffering from leprosy, TB, and HIV/AIDS. The group also manages orphanages, schools, mobile clinics, soup kitchens, dispensaries, children’s and family counselling programmes, and orphanages. Members swear an additional vow in addition to their chastity, poverty, and obedience: “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.”
Numerous awards, such as the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, were given to Mother Teresa. She was declared a saint on September 4, 2016, and her feast day is the day after her death anniversary on September 5.
Mother Teresa was a divisive figure both during her life and after her passing, although many people revered her for her humanitarian efforts. She received both praise and criticism for a variety of reasons, including her opinions on abortion and contraception.
She was also attacked for the subpar circumstances in her homes for the terminally ill. She was the subject of movies and other works, and Navin Chawla released her official biography in 1992.
Mother Teresa and Saint Francis Xavier were appointed co-patrons of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta on September 6, 2017.
