The primary watershed and boundary between Switzerland and Italy are shared by the Alps’ Matterhorn mountain. One of the highest summits in the Alps and all of Europe, it is a sizable, nearly symmetrical pyramidal peak in the extensive Monte Rosa region of the Pennine Alps.

The Hörnli, Furggen, Leone/Lion, and Zmutt ridges divide the four steep sides that rise above the surrounding glaciers and face the four compass points. The summit offers views of the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley to the south and the Swiss town of Zermatt in the canton of Valais to the north-east.

Horace-Bénédict de Saussure researched the Matterhorn in the late eighteenth century, and other well-known naturalists and artists, such John Ruskin, did the same in the nineteenth. After the majority of the other major Alpine peaks were conquered, it remained unclimbed and was the focus of a worldwide summit competition.

A group led by Edward Whymper made the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865 from Zermatt; it was cut short when four of its seven members died while descending. The peak of alpinism was brought to an end by this catastrophe, which was later depicted in a number of movies.

The north face, one of the three largest north faces in the Alps together known as “The Trilogy,” was not scaled until 1931. The highest of the Matterhorn’s four faces, the west face, was only fully scaled in 1962. One of the deadliest peaks in the world, the Matterhorn is thought to have claimed the lives of over 500 alpinists.
