Australia, or the Commonwealth of Australia, is a sovereign state made up of the Australian continent’s interior, the island of Tasmania, as well as a number of other smaller islands. 

Australia is the sixth-biggest country in the world and the largest country by area in Oceania, covering a total area of 7,617,930 square kilometers. Australia is the oldest, flattest, driest, and least fertile continent in the world.

By the time the Europeans inhabited the continent, they had established roughly 250 different language groups and some of the longest-known religious and artistic traditions in the world. They arrived by sea and settled on the continent.

Beginning with the European maritime exploration of Australia, Australia has a recorded history. The first European to reach Australia is thought to have been the Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606.

James Cook, a British explorer, charted and claimed Australia’s east coast for his country in 1770. In 1788, the First Fleet of British ships arrived in Sydney to found the penal colony of New South Wales.
