‘The Crown’ writer Peter Morgan has won the 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding writing for a drama series.

Netflix’s historical drama focuses on the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It begins in 1947, the period of Elizabeth’s marriage with Philip. Each season new characters are incorporated in order to make up for the ageing process and time periods.

The second season is set between the Suez Canal crisis and Prince Edward’s birth. The third season spans Harold Wilson’s tenure as Prime Minister. While the fourth season, arguably the best one yet, shows Prince Charles’s marriage to Lady Diana Spencer.

The show is the hot favourite to bag the award for the Best Drama series. They have received this nomination for three of its previous seasons as well but have failed to convert them into a win. However, it seems like it’s finally The Crown’s time to shine.

As per media reports, a guest list of 500-odd nominees has been made for the Emmys to gather in the venue’s outdoor section, under strict pandemic precautions including proof of inoculation.  Angela Bassett, Michael Douglas, Dolly Parton, and Awkwafina are among the presenters.

“Making that level of celebrities ill is not on our agenda,” Emmys producer Ian Stewart told Variety, nonetheless promising a “fun, ritzy party” for those who clear security.

The 73rd edition of the Emmys kicked off on Sunday, 19 September.
