Four-time World Champions Germany crashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 even as they beat Costa Rica 4-2

This is Germany’s second consecutive exit from the group stage of the World Cup, with the then defending World Champions (Germany won the World Cup in 2014) also failing to make it past the preliminary stages four years ago in Russia.

Having lost their first match to Japan and drawn the second with Spain, Germany not only were in a must win situation but also neeeded Japan to not win at all costs. Even a 1-1 draw for Japan and a 1-0 win for Germany would not have been enough for the Germans.

Despite starting on a tremendous note with an 11th minute goal by Serge Gnabry and teenager Jamal Musiala producing one of his finest performances, Germany failed to improve on their tally and ended the first half with the meagre 1-0 lead.

Things started going astray for Germany when Japan, also trailing Spain 0-1 after the first half, struck back with two quick goals to go 2-1 up. That was already a bad sign for the Germans as with a Japan win, Spain would qualify thanks to their massive 7-0 win over Costa Rica earlier in the event.

The match situation too got out of control thanks to two quick strikes by Costa Rica. However, Germany kai Havertz scored a brilliant brace, first picking up the team’s equaliser in the 74th minute before moving on to score his second in the 86th that gave them back the lead. With just a few minutes to go, Germany’s talisman from the match with Spain, Nicklas Fullkrug scored to take the lead to 4-2.

However, Japan’s 2-1 win over Spain and Spain’s huge goal difference (GD) meant that Germany crashed out of the World Cup yet again.
