Despite his claims that he couch surfs and does not currently own a house, Elon Musk confesses to having one luxury: his $66.5 million private plane. According to Business Insider, the Tesla CEO acquired a Gulfstream G650ER in 2016, a popular aircraft among the 1%, including sports star Cristiano Ronaldo and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Musk’s flying habits have been widely chronicled over the years, with the Washington Post reporting that in 2018, he travelled on over 250 trips around the United States, Europe, and Asia, spending $700,000 on his jet. There is also a Twitter account with the name @ElonJet that records the private plane’s movements, and according to the account, Musk’s aeroplane arrived in Austin, the new Telsa headquarters, last Thursday.

Earlier this week, the world’s richest man, 50, disclosed that he does not own a home and ‘literally’ couch surfs at the homes of his pals depending on where he needs to be. Musk told TED’s Chris Anderson that when he needs to stay in San Francisco’s Bay Area, he cycles around spare beds. He said he did not spend a lot of money on himself, but conceded that his private plane was an exception.

According to Gulfstream, Musk’s 99-foot-long luxury jet is a reasonable trade-off for an actual house, with numerous big-screen televisions, fresh air circulation, and 195 square feet for luggage storage. The plane also has a big laboratory and four enormous living rooms with cream-coloured leather chairs and wood furnishings. One of the living areas has a VIP cabin with a sliding door that is ideal for hosting private meetings. It has a sofa and flat-screen television. The living rooms’ 19 seats all recline, have footrests and can be turned into beds. Folding tables stored on the plane’s side may be connected to make a huge dining room table where passengers can dine.

Musk’s living circumstances have been widely rumoured in the past, with Musk tweeting last year that his primary residence was a $50,000 SpaceX rental in Texas. However, in his June tweet, he admitted to having a ‘events home’ in San Francisco’s Bay Area.

Despite this, the Wall Street Journal claimed in December that he had been sleeping in an Austin property owned by his PayPal co-founder Ken Howery. When it was purchased in 2018, the mansion, estimated to be 8,000 square feet and valued at $12 million, was the most expensive in the city. Meanwhile, Musk tweeted in May 2020, ‘I am selling practically all tangible assets.’ Will not own a home.’

He offered five houses for sale in May of that year. Four of the Los Angeles properties were advertised on Zillow as part of a multi-property listing for $62.5 million. The fifth mansion, in Hillsborough, California, was advertised for $35 million.

According to the Musk fan blog Teslarati and the Houston Chronicle, Elon Musk previously stated that he was living in a 375-square-foot modular home constructed by the firm Boxabl. He had stated that he was renting the house for around $50,000. Though Musk has not verified the name of the company where he now resides, a Boxabl unit appears to be visible on Google Earth.

The company’s residences are small but beautiful, designed in the style of a studio apartment, with an open plan living space, kitchen, and bedroom, as well as an adjacent bathroom. A folding box constructed of concrete panels and steel is used to assemble the properties.

According to Teslarati, Musk was renting a mass-produced 20-foot-by-20-foot ‘foldable prefabricated house’ called the Boxabl Casita.

Boxabl would not confirm if Musk lived in one of its houses, but it did reveal in November that it had built a Casita for a ‘high-profile’ and ‘top secret’ customer near Boca Chica.
