International Chef Day is observed on October 20 every year. The day was established by Dr. Bill Gallagher, a renowned master chef and former president of the South African Chef Association in 2004. The day acknowledges the efforts of chefs around the world.

The theme for International Chef Day 2022 is Growing A Healthy Future.

History of International Chef Day

Marcus Apicius, a Roman gourmet wrote the world’s first cookbook in the first century AD. The book comprised over 400 recipes. In 1765, Boulanger, a Persian, opened the first restaurant. Boulanger served bouillons, that is, restorative broths.

In 1846, Auguste Escoffier, a French chef, established the Brigade System. He worked to reduce working hours for cooking and divided tasks in an effective manner. Escoffier published Le Guide Culinaire, which is still used as a major reference work, both in the form of a cookbook and a textbook on cooking.

Every year, the World Association of Chefs Societies (WorldChefs) and their partners create different themes to help broadcast their mission. WorldChefs was established in 1928, in Sorbonne, Paris, when a Swiss federation introduced the idea of an international chef association.
