Singer Britney Spear‘s father Jamie Spears agreed on Thursday to step down as his daughter’s conservator, according to Britney’s lawyer, drawing to a close the lengthy public battle between father and daughter.
“We are pleased that Jamie Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed. It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,” said Mathew Rosengart, the singer’s lawyer, in a statement, Variety reported.
Last month, Jodi Montgomery, personal conservator of Britney had said in a court that the star’s medical team agreed that she no longer requires her father as her estate conservator.
Montgomery said this in a court filing where she suggested replacing Spears’ father with Jason Rubin as the co-conservator of the singer’s estate.
Rubin’s resume boasts of principal at Certified Strategies, a firm that has experience in estate financial management, elder financial abuse investigation, investment fraud investigation, and securities litigation.
The pop star’s assets are valued at more than $50 million. She has made several claims of abuse against her father, alleging he has used the arrangement for personal gain. James Spears has publicly denied these accusations.
Jamie Spears was given Britney’s conservatorship in 2008 after she faced a public mental-health crisis. The singer in the past has many times appealed to dismiss her father. Britney’s fans have also launched a #FreeBritney campaign to support her.
The motion to remove Jamie Spears and replace him with Jason Rubin is scheduled for hearing on September 29.
