Detained Burmese public leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday was slammed
with two more criminal charges during her virtual appearance before the court,
nearly a month after a military coup in Myanmar that saw the Army seize power
of the country, followed by relentless protests across the nation. In her first
appearance since being ousted from power and later detained, the leader’s court
hearing came at the time of escalating demonstrations against the Junta-rule.

Around 18 people died on Sunday due to the police forces firing live
bullets at demonstrators in cities across the country, AFP reported.

75-year-old Suu Kyi already faced obscure criminal charges for
possessing walkie-talkies without license, as well as violating COVID-19
regulations through staging events during the 2020 election in the country.

Now, charges pertaining to violation of communications law, as well as
intent to incite public unrest have been issued against her.

“We can not say for sure how many more cases Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
will face in this period,” Suu Kyi’s lawyer Khin Maung Zaw was quoted by AFP
as saying.

“Anything can happen in this country at this time”, he further
said.

The leader is currently situated in Naypyidaw, an isolated city built previously
by the Army.

The military have justified her arrest, causing a ten-year long democratic
system in the South-East Asian nation to fall face first, by referring to their
own allegations of widespread electoral fraud having taken place in the 2020
elections.
