In Netflix’s The Witcher, we see a good but an unwanted friend of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill). Geralt was forcibly befriended by a womanizing bard called Jaskier (Joey Batey), who takes it upon himself to write songs about Geralt’s heroic deeds. The most notable of these songs is “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher,” a piece that Jaskier composes after his first adventure with Geralt.

Jaskier (whom fans of the Witcher games might better know by the name Dandelion) is as talented at making enemies as he is at singing, and sees Geralt as both a path to adventure and a potential bodyguard for when Jaskier runs into men whose wives he’s bedded. “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” is a heavily embellished account of Geralt’s quest to slay a “devil” that has been stealing grain from a village. The devil turns out to be a Sylvan called Torque (Amit Shah), who has been stealing grain for elves hiding in the mountains.

Though Jaskier’s song describes an incredible victory by Geralt, what actually happens is that both Geralt and Jaskier are knocked out, tied up, and left at the mercy of the elven leader Filavandrel (Tom Canton). The two of them are ultimately set free without a further fight (Geralt even gives the elves his bounty for the job), but Jaskier makes it sound a lot more grand in his song.

Lyrics of the song
When a humble bard
Graced a ride along
With Geralt of Rivia
Along came this song
From when the White Wolf fought
A silver-tongued devil
His army of elves
At his hooves did they revel
They came after me
With masterful deceit
Broke down my lute
And they kicked in my teeth
While the devil%u2019s horns
Minced our tender meat
And so cried the Witcher
He can%u2019t be bleed
Toss a coin to your Witcher
O%u2019 Valley of Plenty
O%u2019 Valley of Plenty, O%u2019
Toss a coin to Your Witcher
O%u2019 Valley of Plenty
At the edge of the world
Fight the mighty horde
That bashes and breaks you
And brings you the morn%u2019
He thrust every elf
Far back on the shelf
High up on the mountain
From whence it came
He wiped out your pest
Got kicked in his chest
He%u2019s a friend of humanity
So give him the rest
That%u2019s my epic tale
A champion prevailed
Defeated the villain
Now pour him some ale

After hearing the first few verses of the song, Geralt interjects that it’s “not how it happened,” and asks Jaskier what happened to his “newfound respect” – to which Jaskier replies, “Respect doesn’t make history.”
