Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won Brazil’s presidential election after defeating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a closely-fought second-round vote.

After the win, the 77-year-old tweeted a photo of his hand touching the Brazilian flag with the word “democracy” written. Lula’s inauguration will take place on January 1.

The new president has been married three times. In 1969, he married Maria de Lourdes, who died of hepatitis in 1971. In 1974, Lula had a daughter, Lurian, with his then-girlfriend, Miriam Cordeiro. The two were never married.

In 1974, Lula married Marisa Letícia Rocco Casa, a widow with whom he had three sons. Lula and Marisa remained married for 43 years, until her death on February 2, 2017 after a stroke.

In 2022, Lula married Rosangela Silva, who will now be the first lady of Brazil.

Who is Rosangela Silva?

Commonly known by her nickname Janja, Rosangela is a Brazilian sociologist. She was born August 27, 1966, in União da Vitória, state of Paraná. She moved to Curitiba during her childhood.

She joined the Workers’ Party in 1983. In 1990, she enrolled the studies of Social Science at the Federal University of Paraná and specialized in History in the same institution.

She was hired by Itaipu Binacional on January 1, 2005, where she was assistant to the Director-General and coordinator of programs backed to sustainable development.

Between 2012 and 2016, Janja was communications and institutional affairs advisor at Eletrobras, in Rio de Janeiro. In 2016, she returned to Itaipu. She officially left the company on January 1, 2020.

She met Lula da Silva while he was serving time in jail in Curitiba, Paraná, due to corruption charges. The charges against Lula were later dropped.
