Saint Andrew’s Day has been an official national day in Scotland since 2006. In Romania, it was declared a
national holiday in 2015. The date falls on Wednesday in 2022.

Who was Saint Andrew?

Saint Andrew was one
of Jesus Christ’s 12 apostles and the day is an annual celebration dedicated to
his legacy in Christian philosophy. The Bible says that Andrew introduced Peter
to Jesus. Peter is Andrew’s brother who is traditionally thought of as the
first Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.

Andrew met a terrible
fate as a martyr due to his beliefs after the Romans ordered his execution.
However, the Saint resisted saying that he wasn’t ‘worthy’ to die in the same
manner as Jesus.

Saint Andrew was
hanged on a diagonal cross on November 30, 60 AD. This X-shaped cross is the
symbol of Scotland’s Saltire flag commemorating his final day. Saint Andrew is
the saint of the Order of the Thistle which is among the highest ranks of
chivalry in the world.

Italy, Scotland, Greece, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarchate
