She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has not been shy to take a swing back at haters who criticized the Disney+ series. Thus far, the episodes turned their attention to men and their insecurities at being faced with a female superhero. However, the latest episode makes a Shrek reference in a subtle yet deliberate manner. 

The utterance comes from Titania, who has gradually positioned herself as an antagonist, taking She-Hulk to court over the patented use of her name. While Jennifer Walters walks into the courtroom as She-Hulk, Titania tells her “nice suit, Shrek”. 

The Shrek reference is also the show’s way of making fun of trolls who drew comparisons between the Marvel Cinematic Universe character and the ogre from DreamWorks Animation.

One Twitter user commented, “It’s almost like they unintentionally knew She-Hulk would be compared to Shrek by certain parts of the fanbase/social media sphere.” 

Both Shrek and She-Hulk are green, but the ogre has made a special place in fans’ hearts with the redeeming love story of leaving the comfort of his bog to rescue the princess from a tower guarded by a dragon. Shrek accepts that he’s not good looking but She-Hulk has to be more careful about her image, which is why the sartorial reference pops up in court.

Titania initially has the edge, with her lawyer playing a series of clips where Walters doesn’t wish to be called the She-Hulk. Walters sticks to her guns and presents one video where she says She-Hulk was a moniker given to her, and one she eventually embraced. However, the opposing side argues that this doesn’t establish a pattern.  

Walters decides that self-humiliation is her only path to victory and lines up all her recent dates, whom she’d introduced herself to as She-Hulk. It eventually gets her the win against Titania, but now, the super-powered entrepreneur has her sights set on Walters.
