James Cameron, the legendary filmmaker who has given us enduring classics like The Terminator and Titanic has said that he is interested in taking the Avatar franchise forward if the sequel, The Way of The Water, proves to be a success.
The 68-year-old director told The Hollywood Reporter that he has already chalked out plans for the sixth and seventh films of the series. However, he also admitted that he will be too old by then and will have to train someone else to helm the projects.

“I’d be 89 by then,” he said, further adding, “Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required. I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this.”
Cameron further says that he is going to make five or six more movies, among which there will be three Avatar sequels.
However, the director is also concerned about whether the film will do well, since the world has changed from the time when he had first written it. He said, “The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘Okay, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly,’ if it’s just not profitable,” he said.
Cameron has cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the surge of streaming platforms as two deterrents that might hamper the performance of Avatar 2 at the box office.
On the other hand, he is also hopeful, saying, “Or, conversely, maybe we’ll remind people what going to the theater is all about. This film definitely does that. The question is: how many people give a s*** now?”
Avatar: The Way of The Water is set to hit the big screens on December 16, 2022.
