Answer: Kimono

The kimono, from the word “thing,” is a traditional Japanese garment and Japan‘s national clothing. Unless the wearer is deceased, the kimono is a wrapped-front robe with square sleeves and a rectangle body that is worn on the left side and wrapped over the right. The kimono is normally worn with a broad sash called an obi and is commonly paired with zori sandals and tabi socks.

Kimono are created in a certain way and are normally made from a long, narrow bolt of fabric known as a tanmono, however, Western-style fabric bolts are occasionally used. Kimono styles vary for men, women, and children, according to the occasion, season, the wearer’s age, and – less typically in modern times – the wearer’s marital status. Despite the kimono’s image as a formal and difficult-to-wear outfit, there are kimonos that are appropriate for both formal and informal settings. Kitsuke refers to how a person wears their kimono.

Though formerly the most prevalent Japanese garment, the kimono has fallen out of fashion and is now rarely donned as everyday attire. Kimono are currently most commonly seen at summer festivals, where people wear the most relaxed version of kimono, the yukata; nevertheless, more formal types of kimono are also worn to funerals, marriages, graduations, and other formal ceremonies. Geisha and maiko, who are forced to wear kimono as part of their vocation, and rikishi, or sumo wrestlers, who must wear kimono at all times in public, are other common wearers.
