Answer: Okapi

The Okapi, also known as the forest giraffe or the Congolese giraffe is a mammal that is only found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa.

Though the okapi has stripes that are reminiscent of zebras, the mammal is related most closely to the giraffe. The animal stands at around 1.5 metres tall and usually has a length of about 2.5 metres. It can weigh anything between 200 to 350kgs.

The animal is characterised by a brown coat which contrasts with the white horizontal stripes that become rings on their legs going all the way down till the ankles.

Okapi’s are primarily diurnal animals, i.e., they spend the day awake and sleep at night. However, they have been seen to be active for a few hours in the darkness. While solitary, they usually only come together during their mating season. They are herbivores feeding on grasses, ferns, fruits and fungi.

The animals is classified as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Their habitats have been endangered by logging activities and human encroachment. Their population has seen a continuous decline as a result of which the Okapi Conservation Project was founded in 1983.
