Chen Yidan established the Yidan Prize in 2016 to recognise “contributions to education research and development.” A HK$2.5 billion (approximately US$320 million) independent trust manages and finances the award. It has been called the biggest education prize on earth and is an international, open-access education award that honours innovators who spur educational advancement for a better world.
The names of Carol S. Dweck and Vicky Colbert, the first prize winners, were announced in September 2017. The award presentation took conducted in Hong Kong in December 2017.
Anant Agarwal and Larry Hedges were the two winners from last year.
Usha Goswami and Sir Fazle Hasan won the award in 2019.
The prize was given to American physicist Carl Wieman for his contributions to STEM education, research-based enhancements to university instruction, and the transformation of science instruction at top research institutions.
The medal was given to Lucy Lake and Angeline Murimirwa from Camfed, an NGO that works to end poverty in Africa by educating girls and empowering young women. They were recognised for their support of girls’ education and the advancement of education in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Eric A. Hanushek, the Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow at Stanford University‘s Hoover Institution, received the prize for education research, and Dr. Rukmini Banerji, the CEO of the Pratham Education Foundation, received the medal for education development.
