After more than a decade in development, Devil in the White City will finally be available on Hulu.

Leonardo DiCaprio obtained the rights to Erik Larson’s book on the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and its connection to the first modern serial killer in 2010. At the time, the aim was to make a film based on the story, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring DiCaprio.

The Hulu version, on the other hand, will be a mini-series starring Keanu Reeves. Along with the announcement that Reeves would be joining the cast, there are now some additional facts about the project’s release schedule and plot.

Here’s all we know so far about the impending Devil in the White City adaptation.

Release date

Hulu hasn’t specified a precise release date yet, although it has stated that it will be in 2024.

Meanwhile, production on the miniseries is expected to begin in 2023. With Reeves’ John Wick 4 filming completed and the fifth instalment in pre-production (according to IMDB), it appears that Devil in the White City will begin production once that sequel is completed.

Cast

So far, Reeves is the only member of the cast who has been announced. It would be his first role on American television since the short-lived Bill and Ted cartoon series in 1990 (though he did star in Swedish series Swedish Dicks in 2014).

He’ll be playing fair architect Daniel H. Burnham rather than serial killer H.H. Holmes. When Deadline reported in January that Reeves was in talks to star in the project, speculation about his casting arose.

Previously, there were speculations that the producers were eyeing Robert Pattinson for a role, although this has yet to be confirmed.

Though the casting of Holmes has not yet been announced, we do know some of the talent participating behind the scenes. Scorsese and DiCaprio will remain executive producers, while Todd Field, the three-time Oscar nominee behind In the Bedroom and Little Children, will direct.

Before Devil in the White City, Field will release Tár, his first film in more than 15 years, starring Cate Blanchett as the first female chief conductor of a large German orchestra.

Play

The official synopsis for the book is as follows: “One was an architect. The other a serial killer. This is the incredible story of these two men and their realization of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, and its amazing ‘White City’; one of the wonders of the world.

“The architect was Daniel H. Burnham, the driving force behind the White City, the massive, visionary landscape of white buildings set in a wonderland of canals and gardens. The killer was H. H. Holmes, a handsome doctor with striking blue eyes. He used the attraction of the great fair – and his own devilish charms – to lure scores of young women to their deaths.

“While Burnham overcame politics, infighting, personality clashes and Chicago’s infamous weather to transform the swamps of Jackson Park into the greatest show on Earth, Holmes built his own edifice just west of the fairground. He called it the World’s Fair Hotel. In reality it was a torture palace, a gas chamber, a crematorium.

“These two disparate but driven men are brought to life in this mesmerizing, murderous tale of the legendary Fair that transformed America and set it on course for the twentieth century.”
