Ike Turner was an American musician, bandleader, songwriter, record producer, and talent scout. He was a key figure in the growth of rock and roll in the 1950s, but he is best remembered for his leadership of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s and 1970s with his then-wife Tina Turner.

Izear Luster Turner Jr. was born to Beatrice Cushenberry, a seamstress, and Izear Luster Turner, a Baptist minister. His parents were Creole. Turner was the younger of their two children with his sister, Lee Ethel Knight.

Ike Turner Relationship:

Turner claimed he had been married fourteen times. Allegedly, he frequently wed a different woman before divorcing his first spouse.

Ike and Tina first connected at the Manhattan Club in East St. Louis in 1957. This was the marriage he was most recognized for. They grew close, and she even had his child while dating his saxophonist Raymond Hill.

Ike and Tina soon started dating, and in January 1960, she gave birth to his child. They got married in Tijuana in 1962 after the birth of their son Ronnie in October 1960. Tina filed for divorce in July 1976 citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the altercation. Turner later claimed that he was never even legally married to Tina, though.

Ike Turner Career:

Turner learned to play the piano and guitar as a young boy, and as a teenager, he founded the Kings of Rhythm. His debut song, “Rocket 88,” is thought to be a candidate to be the first rock & roll tune. In 1960, he founded the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, which went on to achieve popularity as a soul/rock crossover act over the following ten years.

Contemporaries like Little Richard and Johnny Otis praised him as a “great innovator” of rock and roll. Turner received five Grammy Awards in all, including three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards and two competitive awards. He is inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame, the Clarksdale Walk of Fame, the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame.
