Recently, there was a lot of outrage on social media against Jason Aldean‘s highly contentious music video for Try That in a Small Town. CMT has confirmed that the network removed the troubling video from the air on Monday after it had been initially broadcast. They took this measure before Tuesday’s “Boycott CMT” issue grew more heated.

The song was initially released in May, but it has recently been rising in the charts across a number of platforms. This happened after Jason Aldean shared a video on social media on July 14 promoting this single in an effort to generate excitement for an upcoming album release.

On Tuesday, it reached the top spot on iTunes for music in the United States. It’s also ranked #9 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases list, and the video is also trending on YouTube, where it has climbed to the #12 spot among all music-related content.

A CMT spokesman failed to provide any additional insight into the video’s removal. Representatives of Aldean’s record company, BBR Music Group, who were contacted for comment, did not respond. Billboard was the first to report on the network removing the video.

Both the song’s “very scary lyrics” and the music video, which was filmed in front of the Tennessee courthouse where a Black man was killed by a mob in 1927, have garnered criticism.

In the song, Aldean mentions a gun that his grandfather got him and says he doesn’t want to part with it. In his song, he says, “They say one day they’re gonna round up/Well, that s*** might fly in the city, good luck.”

The lyrics continue: “See how far ya make it down the road/Around here, we take care of our own/You cross that line, it won’t take long/ For you to find out, I recommend you don’t/Try that in a small town.”
