The Narcotics Control Bureau, which joined the probe linked with actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in late August, on Tuesday arrested the late actor’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty. This came after the Enforcement Directorate found a drugs angle related to the case while questioning Chakraborty, who has also been accused of siphoning off Sushant’s money among many others.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the death of Rajput. Here is what we know about the drugs angle related to the case so far.

What is the Narcotics Control Bureau investigating?

The Narcotics Control Bureau is an intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs, tasked with combating drug trafficking and illegal substance abuse. According to reports, while the Enforcement Directorate was questioning Rhea Chakraborty for a parallel money laundering case linked to Rajput’s death, they found evidence pertaining to possible substance abuse in connection with the case.

When did this happen?

The ED had questioned Rhea on August 25, when the drug angle emerged. The agency wrote a letter to the NCB following this. The case was registered on August 26.

Who registered the case?

Following a letter from the ED, the NCB registered a case against several people under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), including Rhea Chakraborty.

Who all have been arrested?

On September 8, the central agency arrested actor Rhea Chakraborty over drug charges. Prior to this, her brother Showik Chakraborty, Sushant’s house help Dinesh Sawant and his house manager Samuel Miranda. Prior to this, the NCB had arrested alleged drug peddlers including Kaizan Ibrahim, Zaid Vilatra and Basit Parihar.

Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his flat in Mumbai’s Bandra on June 14. The Mumbai Police has initially said that the 34-year-old actor died by suicide, however, the case was later transferred to the CBI following a Supreme Court’s order on the plea of Rajput’s family.
