Netflix series The Crown is gearing up for its 5th season and the official trailer for the same was released on YouTube on Thursday, October 20. The series which is based on the British Royal family will focus on the events of the 1990s when Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage was falling apart, leading to their eventual chaotic divorce.

Trailer

The trailer begins with a scene showcasing the 1992 fire that broke out at Windsor Castle. “The Royal Family is in genuine crisis”, British journalist Martin Bashir says in the trailer. This season, as seen from the trailer, will explore the era when Princess Diana dealt with the difficulties of being a royal and finally had to speak out to the world about her mistreatment by the Royal family. The trailer also provides the audiences with a glimpse of the infamous 1995 BBC interview with Princess Diana where she spoke about her mental health, her relationship with Prince Charles, and their eventual separation.

Diana’s untimely death however may not be explicitly shown in this season and can be a part of the sixth season, which is currently filming.

Plot

The description of the official trailer describes the plot of the movie as:

“Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign”

“It’s a new decade, and the royal family are facing what may be their biggest challenge yet: proving their continued relevance in ’90s Britain. As Diana and Charles wage a media war, cracks begin to splinter the royal foundation.”

Cast

This season of the show stars Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles. Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville star as The Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Margaret respectively.

The season will premiere on Netflix on November 9, 2022.
