Dr. Katharine Roxanne Grawe will no longer be able to practice medicine in Ohio as the State Medical Board of Ohio has voted to permanently revoke her medical license. The decision comes after Grawe, a plastic surgeon, faced accusations of injuring patients while livestreaming procedures on the social media platform TikTok.

Grawe’s license had been suspended since November 18, and the board determined that she neglected her patients by livestreaming parts of their surgeries, addressing the camera, and responding to viewer questions during the procedures. The board emphasized that this case was not about a traditional view of social media but about the trust patients placed in Grawe based on what they saw online.

During the hearing, Grawe pleaded with the board to approach the accusations against her with an open mind. She stated that the discipline she had already faced was more severe than she ever anticipated and expressed the negative impact the allegations had on her personal life, including her children being attacked at school and her husband leaving her.

Grawe claimed that her intention was to break down the barrier between patients and practitioners using social media, but she now recognizes that her actions fell short of the medical board’s standards. She acknowledged that some of her videos appeared unprofessional and that her conduct may have offended her patients and colleagues.

The board criticized Grawe for her recklessness and disregard for patient privacy, stating that she prioritized her social media persona over the lives of her patients. Despite previous warnings from the board secretary about maintaining patient privacy on social media, Grawe continued to film and livestream medical procedures.

The allegations against Grawe involved three patients who experienced complications following surgeries performed at her practice, Roxy Plastic Surgery. In one case, a patient required emergency care due to complications from liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift, and a skin-tightening procedure. The patient’s bowel had been perforated, leading to a serious bacterial infection.

Members of the medical board emphasized that Grawe’s actions caused severe damage and infections, with some patients likely to suffer complications for the rest of their lives. Given her disregard for patient safety and the gravity of the harm caused, the board determined that Grawe should not be allowed to practice medicine again.

While Grawe may have sought to use social media to connect with patients, her actions ultimately resulted in the loss of her medical career.
