Groot is a Flora colossus and Rocket Raccoon’s partner. They had roamed the cosmos collecting bounty until they encountered Star-Lord and Gamora moments before the four of them were abducted and imprisoned in the Kyln, where they also met Drax the Destroyer. They agreed to collaborate in order to escape and sell the Orb for a huge sum.
When it was revealed that the Orb held one of the Infinity Stones sought after by Ronan the Accuser, Groot persuaded his comrades to risk everything to halt Ronan’s evil schemes.
Groot gave his life to help his new friends at the Battle of Xandar. However, Rocket used a piece of his damaged body to create a new Groot as they joined the Guardians of the Galaxy.
As the new Groot grew, he stayed with the Guardians and went on numerous adventures with them. They were quickly hired by the Sovereign to destroy an Abilisk, but they were afterward hunted by their former employers owing to Rocket’s betrayal. They had met Peter Quill’s father Ego during the escape, while Groot and Rocket, along with Yondu Udonta, were imprisoned by Taserface’s Ravagers gang, but Groot was able to assist them all in escape.
Groot then joined his companions and helped them kill Ego and save all of his pals, although Udonta died. Groot grew during the next four years and began to demonstrate the characteristics of a teenager.
Groot and Rocket then temporarily departed the Guardians to accompany Thor to Nidavellir to aid in his attempt to prevent Thanos from completing the Infinity Gauntlet. Stormbreaker, Groot, and Rocket flew to Earth via the Bifrost Bridge after assisting Thor in obtaining his weapon and joined the Battle of Wakanda.
Groot fought side by side with Captain America and attempted to assault Thanos; but, when the Mad Titan gathered all six Infinity Stones, he was able to wipe out half of the universe’s inhabitants, resulting in Groot’s death.
Five years later, the Avengers were able to resuscitate the Snap victims, including Groot. He and Winter Soldier departed Wakanda using an Inter-Dimensional Portal to join the Battle of Earth. Following the battle, Groot attended Tony Stark’s funeral before rejoining the Guardians, who now included Thor, on their adventures.
