A dose of Covovax costs Rs 900 plus GST, in addition to hospital service charge of Rs 150. 

The vaccine is produced by the Serum Institute of India under licence from Novavax and is part of the COVAX facility portfolio. The WHO issued an emergency use listing for the vaccine in December 2021.

“The vaccine, named CovovaxTM, is, giving a much-needed boost to ongoing efforts to vaccinate more people in lower-income countries,” the UN body had said.

Serum Institute of India (SII) Director for Government and Regulatory Affairs Prakash Kumar Singh had written to the Union Health Ministry, requesting for Covovax’s inclusion in the immunisation drive for children aged 12 to 17 years in India. 

In his letter, Singh had stated that the Pune-based firm wanted to provide Covovax to private hospitals at a per-dose rate of Rs 900 plus Goods and Services Tax (GST).

India’s drug regulator had approved Covovax for restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28 last year and in the 12-17 age group, subject to certain conditions, on March 9.
