Amazon Quiz: (June 10) This animal belongs to which genus of animals?

Cervus

Mazama

Hydropotes

Elaphurus

Answer: Cervus

Cervus is a genus of deer native to Eurasia, with one species found in northern Africa and the other in North America. In addition to the species now assigned to this genus, it has included a wide range of other species that are now assigned to other genera. Furthermore, the species-level taxonomy is under change.

Cervus also contained members of the genera Axis, Dama, and Elaphurus until the 1970s, and Rucervus and Rusa until the late 1980s.

Only the red deer (Cervus elaphus) and the sika deer (Cervus nippon) were recognised as species in the genus Cervus in the third installment of Mammal Species of the World published in 2005. More species should be recognised based on genetic and morphological data. Cervus canadensis (elk/wapiti), for example, is considered a distinct species.

Some publications have suggested that the Central Asian red deer (Cervus hanglu) be classified as a species within the red deer species group. If the Central Asian red deer (from the Caspian Sea to western China) is accepted as a species, it includes the Yarkand and Bactrian deer (which may be synonymous), but it may also contain the Kashmir stag, which has not been sampled in recent investigations.

If it is classified as a Central Asian red deer, its scientific name is C. hanglu. If it is not included, the scientific name for that species is C. yarkandensis, and the Kashmir stag (C. hanglu) may be a distinct monotypic species. The IUCN classified the Central Asian red deer as a separate species (including the Yarkand deer, Kashmir stag, and Bactrian deer as subspecies) in 2017, and the American Society of Mammalogists did so in 2021.
